Viasat use the capacity of the Brazilian state-owned telecommunications service provider Telebras to expand its Ka-band (IFC) in-flight connectivity coverage for business jets in Brazil. The satellite operator said on Tuesday that the additional capacity would come from the SGDC-1 (Geostationary Satellite for Defense and Strategic Communications) from Telebras, its partner Ka-band satellite.
With the expansion, Viasat said it can now provide service to more than 90% of Brazilian business aviation flight paths.
“Business jets operating in the country will be able to access Viasat’s advanced connectivity from takeoff to landing – at speeds typically over 20 Mbps – allowing passengers to do the same connected activities in the air as on the ground. , including video, music and TV streaming, video calling, VPN and more, ”Viasat said in its coverage expansion announcement.
Going forward, the operator is expected to provide extended coverage and capacity in parts of Europe and the Middle East on the Avanti Communication GroupHYLAS-4 and HYLAS-2 satellites. This extension was initially announced as part of an agreement reached with Avanti in June. In the announcement, Viasat said it will start taking advantage of Avanti’s satellites from this month.
“We are delighted to bring additional coverage for our advanced in-flight connectivity solution to the business aviation markets in Brazil and, in the near future, in Europe and the Middle East,” said Claudio D ‘ Amico, director of the business aviation area of Viasat. “This extension of coverage will allow us to extend connectivity for existing operators, pursue new activities in these important regions and further establish Viasat’s presence in the global market. “
Viasat then plans to increase coverage and capacity in those regions with its upcoming Ka-band constellation ViaSat-3 – made up of three satellites that are expected to launch into geostationary orbit next year. The satellites are designed to provide broadband connectivity with speeds of over 8 Mbps to commercial, corporate and government customers around the world.
