The Sunset community wants broadband to be an address

As a result of ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Vice President Kamala Harris will not be coming to St. Landry Parish.

Harris was scheduled to meet with community leaders at Sunset tomorrow about high-speed internet access.

Although Vice President Harris won’t make an appearance here at Sunset on Friday, all residents say broadband remains an issue that needs to be addressed.

“We’re lost here in St. Landry Parish because we’re just not as connected as we could be.

When students had to go virtual at the start of the year, St. Landry School Principal Lindsay Smythe says that with unreliable internet in the parish, they had to go back to forms of teaching older.

“Because we had parents saying we had no reliable internet or no internet at all at home, we knew we had to provide packages as well. We brought in the old school analog and take your bundle, color the page because we knew there were families who would have learning loss if it was all online,” Smythe said.

It’s a feeling a student at the school knows only too well.

“One time a lot of people were on the internet, so one person couldn’t get on the internet,” said St. Landry School student Braylen Smith.

According to Connect Louisiana, 3.42% of Saint-Landry residents do not have Internet access, and about 16.6% do not know how to use it.

For a business owner, she hopes to pay less for broadband.

“If the government or the powers that be can bring us affordable internet, fast and affordable internet, I would definitely want it in my shop,” said Bayou Some Stuff owner Marvel Guidry.

While others just want to scroll through social media without interruption.

“It’s very annoying because when I scroll on TikTok it’s just going to freeze on me,” said Cankton Elementary School student Makyia Walker.

“Hopefully this comes down to an omen so we’ll just have to wait and see,” Smythe added.

A new date for Vice President Harris’ visit is yet to be determined.
