Senator Cassidy talks about broadband funding in Evangeline Parish

Sen. Bill Cassidy was in Evangeline Parish on Monday to announce funding to build broadband infrastructure in multiple parishes.

During an event at Ville Platte High School, Cassidy told those gathered that the National Telecommunications and Information Administration will fund a $29.9 million grant to build broadband infrastructure in the parishes of Evangeline, Acadie and Saint-Landry.

According to the senator, the grant will cover most of Evangeline Parish, including Ville Platte High School. Cassidy also visited the city and elected officials as well as the Acadiana Planning Commission at the Evangeline Parish Courthouse.

The grant indicates that the Acadiana Regional Public/Private Partnership for the Deployment of a Fiber to the Home Network in the Rural Underserved Areas of Acadiana project is a last-mile broadband deployment in the Acadiana region of Louisiana, designed to bring eligible broadband to 22,196 unserved households in the region.

Last month, United States Vice President Kamala Harris was in St. Landry Parish to announce funding for broadband communications in several Acadiana parishes.

While at Sunset, Harris said high-speed internet is a necessary tool, but it’s especially necessary for children.

Thirty percent of households in St. Landry Parish lack access to high-speed internet, Harris said. Students sit in fast food parking lots to access WiFi to do their homework, she said. Older people are doing telemedicine visits to public libraries, she said.

The bipartisan Infrastructure Act contains billions for laying down miles of fiber to help households lower or access their monthly bill, Harris said.

Harris also announced $60 million in funding for flood resilience, including $40 million earmarked for Louisiana.
