MOSCOW (Roscosmos PR) – Russian Space Systems Holding (part of Roscosmos State Corporation) presented complex solutions based on satellite navigation and Earth remote sensing services for the development of unhindered navigation along of the Northern Sea Route at the Army-2022 International Military-Technical Forum.

The solution is based on an anti-interference navigation module developed by the RKS, installed on a seagoing vessel. The product is about the size of a CD and two centimeters thick, equipped with eight flat antennas, each the size of a two-ruble coin. The main task of such a module is to determine the position of the user in space up to one meter, even under the influence of interference, the power of which exceeds the power of weak satellite navigation signals.

The new RSS technology combines navigational data and Earth remote sensing satellite information into a single digital link. The combined information is transmitted to the ship’s navigation equipment and enables real-time route planning, taking into account surrounding ice and weather conditions.

The interaction between the on-board navigator and the complex of satellite solutions of the RCS is managed by the software of the company Space Communications (part of the RCS). A simple and understandable interface of the program provides the user with detailed information about the navigation situation and gives recommendations for maneuvering the vessel in the current conditions. The user program is integrated into the subscriber’s system and allows you to interact with other users of the navigation solution.

“Imagine that an icebreaker is sailing in the Arctic Ocean, with impenetrable ice in front of it. In what direction should the captain steer the ship, how to maneuver to reach the end point of the route? One of the satellites surveillance, through the “vision” of the RKS’s onboard multi-area scanning devices, will see from orbit where the ice on the route is thinnest, combine that with navigational data on the ship’s current position, and build a geometrically complex route,” said Mikhail Kirechko.

“This information will be displayed in the ship’s navigator in the form of the following algorithm: swim 270 meters straight, turn left 90 degrees and swim another 70 meters, turn 30 degrees right, go straight forward for 3 kilometers , etc. From the captain’s bridge, the ice thickness will appear uniform, but the satellite data will help to cross the road safely and without hindrance,” Kirechko added.

All technical solutions of the RCS are delivered in a secure form, information between the ground and space segments of the complex is transmitted via secure communication channels insensitive to noise via relay satellites of the Luch and Gonets series.
