NASA releases information on coverage of upcoming cargo launch

NASA - Administration national aeronautics and spaceWashington DC – NASA’s commercial cargo supplier SpaceX is targeting Saturday, August 28 at 3:37 a.m. EDT to launch its 23rd commercial refueling services mission to the International Space Station. Liftoff will be from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft will provide new scientific investigations, supplies and equipment for the international crew.

Live coverage will be broadcast on NASA Television, the NASA app and the agency’s website, with pre-launch events starting Friday, August 27, 2021.

Dragon will provide a variety of investigations from NASA, including one that will determine whether skin and grape seed metabolites used in winemaking could help prevent and treat osteoporosis.

A new robotic arm slated for demonstration could reveal potential uses on Earth, including in disaster relief.

Another experiment will test an implantable, remote-controlled drug delivery system that will use a new research facility onboard the orbiting laboratory. The experiments of several Girl Scouts will also use this new facility to study plants, ants and brine shrimp in microgravity.

Approximately 12 minutes after launch, Dragon will separate from the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket and begin a series of carefully choreographed thruster shots to reach the space station. Arrival at the station is scheduled for Sunday August 29. Dragon will dock autonomously at the forward-facing port of the station’s Harmony module, along with Expedition 65 flight engineers Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur from NASA surveillance operations.

The spacecraft is expected to spend about a month attached to the orbiting outpost before returning to Earth with search and return cargo, splashing off the coast of Florida.

Friday August 27

9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. – Previously accredited media will have the opportunity to speak one-to-one with scientists in their laboratories and other subject matter experts at the Kennedy Space Station processing facility. All participants must adhere to security protocols related to the COVID-19 coronavirus.

12:00 PM – NASA TV will broadcast a Kennedy pre-launch press conference with representatives from NASA’s International Space Station program, SpaceX and the US Space Force’s Delta 45 space launch. Due to the security protocols of the COVID-19 coronavirus, the press conference will take place – in only. To obtain the phone number and access code, please contact the Kennedy Press Room at: no later than 11:00 a.m. on Friday August 27. The audience can also ask questions, which can be answered in real time during the segment, using #AskNASA on Twitter.

Immediately following the press conference, NASA TV will release a “What’s on Board” video that will introduce the public and media to some of the investigators flying science on this mission.
