DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The “Latin America – Mobile Network Operators and MVNOs” report has been added to from ResearchAndMarkets.com offer.

The Latin America – Telecoms, Mobile and Broadband – Statistics and Analyzes report includes all relevant research data and analyzes from the publishers. Covering trends and developments in telecommunications, mobile, internet, broadband, infrastructure and regulation.

Latin American mobile network operators continue their market consolidation strategies. Although there are a significant number of mobile network operators in Central and South America, the region is distinguished by the dominance of the three players Telefonica, America Mobiveil and Millicom International (MIC).

The size of many markets in the region, such as in Brazil and Argentina, has provided ample space for other players to operate, while supporting a vibrant MVNO sector. In other markets such as Ecuador, one or more of the regional players dominate while the incumbent telecom operator also provides competition through its own mobile business unit.

There has been considerable consolidation activity in the market over the past few quarters. America Mobiveil and MIC in particular have attempted to bolster their business in the region by increasing their size and thereby developing subscriber growth as a means of generating revenue.

MIC has focused on its operations in Latin America while gradually disengaging from Africa, as part of a strategy to develop profitable markets where it has a strong market share and where investments in upgrades network level and 5G can pay off in the short and long term.

On the other hand, Telefonica has made efforts to exit the region, with the exception of Brazil. This is also based on a similar strategy whereby the Group focuses on key European markets (UK, Spain, Germany) while maintaining its presence in Brazil, where it remains the market leader in terms of number of subscribers.

Although Telefonica reported a 10% decline in revenue in Brazil in the first nine months of 2021, year-on-year, this was due to a 14.2% increase in 2020. The number of mobile subscribers increased increased steadily in recent years, including a 7.2% increase over the year to September 2021.

Elsewhere in the region, Telefonica has sold its units since 2019. It has already sold its operations in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala (variously to Liberty Latin America, MIC and America Mobiveil), while being also in the process of selling its units in Ecuador and Colombia
