Isotropic systems reported Tuesday that the company’s terminal linked to a geostationary orbit (GEO) satellite while simultaneously connected to a medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite during tests with HIS.

The multi-link antenna was tested on October 22 at SES World Media Port in Manassas, Va., And replicated over the past week. The company said the terminal had established multiple simultaneous high-performance backhaul connections with an SES satellite in GEO and an O3b satellite in MEO. A live Microsoft Teams call was broadcast over simultaneous satellite links.

Finney said this will allow defense, government and business end users to take advantage of the large amount of satellite capacity available in the coming years from non-geostationary orbit constellations (NGSOs). Isotropic has worked with all major satellite operators to design the antenna to be both upstream and downstream compatible with satellite systems. End users will be able to connect to the satellites of several operators at the same time with this antenna.

He gave an example of a defense use case, if a satellite is interrupted for military communications on a mobility vehicle, communication would not be lost with an isotropic antenna as there will always be multiple satellite connections at the same time. . This antenna could also be used as the sole satellite antenna in an aircraft for crew communications and passenger entertainment.

Finney said Isotropic plans to launch the antenna commercially in the summer of 2022 and will expand its team globally and into the UK over the next year to support manufacturing scale-up, services, support and sales.

Steve Collar, CEO of SES and longtime business partner of Finney, said the trials open the door to new multi-orbital service delivery with SES assets in GEO and the upcoming O3b mPOWER system. SES is also an investor in Isotropic and led the company round table earlier this year.
